Armenia’s coach, Ian Porterfield dies of intestinal cancer at a hospice in Britain on Tuesday at the age of 61. Porterfield is best remembered for the goal he scored for second-division Sunderland in the 1973 FA Cup final at Wembley, which led to a stunning 1-0 victory over fist division powerhouse Leeds.
Porterfield became Armenia’s coach in 2006. Last month, the Armenian side battled to a surprising 1-1 draw against favoured Portugal in a European Championship qualifier in Yerevan. Armenia was due to play Malta in a friendly on Wednesday.
