Ramadan - Day 1
Posted on | October 5, 2005 |
Today was the first day of Ramadan. For those of you who don’t know what Ramadan is, it’s that month of the year on the Hijri (Islamic Calender) where all muslims fast. For me, it’s really magical, seeing all these night life, the food, the everything that makes Ramadan special.
From a business point of view for people like us, it’s not really the best time of the year, as things tend to be more than slow. There are so many reasons why things get slow, and of the most important of these things are the very short working hours (almost less than 6 hours), and the fasting (i.e. not having anything to eat before sunset) which is makes people more tired than usual.
I personally do fast at work together with the rest of the staff, and sometimes it can get uncomfortable, but not really from the first day.
Today, for the first time ever, people were slower than ever, and were absolutely not functioning, and it’s really not promisong, as we are still in the first day and we still have got 29 days to go.
Slow everywhere, even when I went and had iftar, the service was so bad, that I almost killed the waiter.
Yes, Ramadan is here, all the nice things that accompany this month is here, but this slow start makes y0u really afraid. Just one more thing, I heard that there was this really nice article today in the Egyptian Gazette, which said something like “Ramadan is this only time in the year, that the nation amazingly start respecting time” - ironic.

I agree that people tend to be rather slow and inactive in Ramadan. But I suppose that’s just at first. Happy Ramadan to you :)
